Snowflakes flutter gently in the wind. “I’m gonna stick to my New Year’s Resolutions this time.”
But, let’s face it... while 2021 is sure to be better, it sure won't be perfect. So, give yourself a break! Be kind to yourself and prioritize you. This year, give yourself something to look forward to, something to plan for, and something to keep you full, focused, and present.

1. Start Fresh 🌤
The first thing you should do is clear out all of the non-keto foods in your house: make a giant sandwich with everything in the refrigerator, hide your kids’ tempting snacks in a cupboard. Out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Make sure you clear out these foods:
- Grains like bread, pasta, rice, oats, and cereal
Sugar like candy, ice cream, juice, chocolate -- don’t worry, we’ve got some keto-friendly Snax to replace your sugar cravings!
- Starchy Veggies like potatoes and sweet potatoes
- Beans and lentils
- Sugary fruits like bananas, apples, and oranges
- Low-fat milks and cheese
- Seed & vegetable oils
Replace the old with the new! Fill up on the good stuff:
- Fats like butter (#FatYeah!), avocado oil, and coconut oil
- Leafy greens like kale, lettuce, and spinach

2. Keep it Simple & Listen to Your Body 👂
The best way to start your keto journey comes down to three magic words: keep it simple. Start with this basic formula for the perfect, balanced meal:
- Pick a Protein: Beef, Pork, Chicken, Fish, Eggs, Protein Powder, etc.
- Pick a Veggie: Cauliflower, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Zucchini, Bell Peppers, etc.
- Add Fat: Butter, Oil, Ghee, Cheese, Bacon, Avocado, Mayonnaise, Nuts, etc.
It can be shocking to your body when you go from eating a lot of carbs and sugar to cutting everything out completely. And sometimes, this can cause temporary keto flu symptoms and cravings. But, cutting carbs cold-turkey isn’t the only way. It’s up to you to listen to your body and decide what feels best for you. If you decide to ease into your keto diet, try these tips:
- Apply a couple of our tips at a time, so your body has time to adjust.
- Cut out foods gradually. Start with cutting out sugar, then go to carbs, and save starchy veggies and high-sugar fruits for last.
Be patient and listen to your body.
3. Plan, Plan, Plan 📝
Some people can get turned off of keto because they worry about how much food they’ll have to cook on their own. But if you take a few minutes to plan out what you’ll eat for the week, we promise it will make things so much easier.
When you take some time to prepare (and purchase) as many keto-friendly snacks as possible, you’re less likely to turn to convenient, carb-heavy options when you’re short on time or are getting hangry. Here’s a few keto snacks that you can take on the go:
- Hard Boiled Eggs
- Cherry Tomatoes

4. Practice Self-Care 🚴
When you start a keto diet, or any diet for that matter, it’s so important to do things that will decrease your stress. Prioritize getting extra sleep, incorporate exercise into your routine, and drink lots of water (hydration is always key!)
Decrease Stress: If you’re currently going through a stressful time, starting a keto diet might not be the best idea. It’s best to begin this wellness journey when you can keep stress to a minimum. If you’re set on starting keto now, however, it’s still possible. Just be sure to do things that center you and keep your mind in a relatively peaceful state, like making time to do fun things that you enjoy and practicing relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation.
Make Sleep a Priority: When you lose sleep, your stress hormones increase, which can prevent you from getting into fat-burning mode (AKA the best mode for ketosis). Try going to bed and waking up at around the same time every day to stabilize your circadian rhythm!
Exercise Regularly: Try to get 30-60 minutes of exercise everyday. Take an energized walk, go for a bike ride, or do an online workout in the comfort of your own home. Sometimes, you’ll even get enough exercise by chasing the kids around all day!
Drink Lots of Water: Dehydration is the most common side effect of going keto. Upping your water intake will help your body replace lost water, regulate your appetite, reduce stress on your kidneys, metabolize fat at a quicker rate, and increase your energy. Drink up!
